PAINTIng overview

My formal training as an architect and urban designer has significant direct and indirect influences in my work as an artist/painter. A preoccupation with the built and un-built environment is a common thread that ties them all together. Experimentation with various other themes as well as various modes of representation does also occur. Travel is also very critical to my work and process - there are those specific moments on trips were the sudden urge to paint hits [the genesis of this being the semester of study abroad in Rome that afforded plenty of these unforgettable moments and experiences].

My work ranges from the gestural to the very picturesque – the latter resulting from a stubborn desire to capture particular and singular moments of time. Often, these moments are times when the realization of the richness and beauty abound and the historical complexity of place strike me with such immensity.

Though there are a lot of similarities in the way I approach an architecture project (and the design process in itself) and the way I tackle the process of painting, one fundamental difference does exist. With painting, all time almost seems to be forgotten and non-existent; there is a silence and a single continuous focus of concentration. Painting brings about a Zen-like experience in that I am completely relaxed and am able to zone out when I paint and this is very important to me because it allows me moments of unbridled clarity. This is not to say that the process of painting itself is not a complicated, tedious and time consuming process but that I have somehow managed to tune these qualities out and instead focus on the freedom to invent and create that painting affords. Additionally, the satisfaction (in the final product) that comes from investing prolonged effort is simply put – priceless.
